Hot Financial Stocks For 2014

We just recently Money Weekly's first birthday, and this milestone also got me thinkingIf I had a magic wand and could instantly pass along a bundle of critical information to my peers, what would that message include? Since I don't have a magic wand, I had to distill a bit of my practical wisdom down to five points (no easy task).

#1. We Are All Pension Fund Managers Now

These days, unless you are a government employee, there is a 97% chance you will not retire with a pension. Instead, you probably have some sort of IRA or 401(k) and other personal savings that you will need to supplement those measly Social Security checks. We have all been thrust into the job of managing our own personal pension funds, so we might as well embrace the challenge and continue our financial education.

Learning how to manage our nest egg is the best educational investment we can make as folks in or approaching retirement. It makes little difference how we made our money; if we don't learn how to make it last, we'll end up back in the workforce or at the mercy of family members.

Tower Group International (TWGP) fell 41% yesterday after the insurance company said it would take a $365 million charge to cover losses. And the selling hasn’t shown any sign of letting up today.

In a report released yesterday, KBW analysts Robert Farnam and Neil Cybart look at Tower Group’s options:

After such a significant reserve charge (24% of net reserves and well over management’s initial $60-110 million range), we view Tower options going forward as limited. Many of the capital raising initiatives floated by the press in recent days were geared towards avoiding an A.M. Best rating downgrade, which we now view as difficult to avoid. [Editor: AM Best cut its rating yesterday] We see two likely scenarios going forward, both of which have a large amount of uncertainty: 1) continuing as a going concern with a revised business plan, or 2) going into run-off/selling renewal rights. We caution though that in both scenarios, whatever value that is left for shareholders is dependent on the outcome of class action lawsuits and future reserve development.

As a result, Farnam and Cybart lowered their price target to $7.50 from $21 and “recommend investors stay on the sidelines.”

Tower Group has dropped 12% to $3.88 today at 11:39 a.m., while Stewart Information Services (STC) has dipped 0.1% to $31.16, theNavigators Group(NAVG) has fallen 1.4% to $54.78 and HCI Group(HCI) has gained 1% to $38.16.

Moreover, at this point I would like to add that the real meaning of forecasting future earnings is so we can determine what the size and amount of the future cash flows that a stock under consideration might be capable of generating for us. This is important, because assessing the net present value of our expected future income stream, is at the heart of determining fair value (intrinsic value). Calculating net present value (NPV) is functionally-related to today's wide utilization of discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis as a stock selection tool. I will elaborate more on this important metric in part B of this article.
