There has been a great deal of concern about the United States suffering from a "lost generation" as Japan has now for several. For investors in oil, this has certainly not been the case: A recent article in The Wall Street Journal noted that oil has risen 310% (Brent Crude) over the last decade. The future looks equally promising for investments in the sector such as ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP), Suncor Energy (NYSE: SU), Americas Petrogas (BOE.V), and Octagon 88 (OTCBB: OCTX).
The exchange traded fund for oil, United States Oil (NYSE: USO), is up more than 12% for the last quarter. Part of the rise of United States Oil in recent market action has been due to the "Syria Premium." But there are many aspects to oil that has it climbing in price as other commodities fall, as noted by The Wall Street Journal piece.

While the $35 million purchase was not that large, it's a rare case where a coal company branches out into other natural resources.

China's nascent energy sector's also hurting between manufacturing's fall and weak exports. Chinese diesel exports declinedto their weakest in seven months in May, and China's Xinhua News Agency sees Chinese domestic diesel demand falling further in the current quarter to match fallingprices. That's not good news for Sinopec (NYSE: SNP ) , one of the world's largest companies and China's leading oil giant. While Sinopec's about as safe a stock as you can imagine in China -- it's the fifth-largestoil company in the world and has engaged in multiple deals with foreign oil giants in exploration and other activities -- the firm's shares could take a hit if domestic demand and prices continue to slump.

The main reason for this has been the large-scale application of new technologies, such as horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," that have allowed producers to more easily coax oil and gas from dense rock formations. Though oilfield services firm Halliburton (NYSE: HAL ) was the first company to use hydraulic fracturing commercially to recover oil and gas all the way back in 1949, the practice didn't become widespread until just about half a decade ago.

Heckmann also expects E&P companies to steadily ramp up activity later this year while pricing for its services is stabilizing. It's a sentiment that's echoed by oil-field service peer Halliburton (NYSE: HAL ) . On the company's last earnings conference call CEO David Lesar said that, "North American headwinds from last year are largely behind us, and we are optimistic about activity levels and continued margin improvement for the remainder of the year." That outlook is shared by most of the oil-field services industry and Heckmann pointed out on its conference call that it has several customers that have already begun to ramp upactivitylevels.
