10 people have been killed and more than 440 people have been wounded during violent protests in Mozambique over a price hike. Thousands of people took to streets to protest over an increase in the prices of basic commodities, including bread.
Health Minister, Ivo Garrido, confirmed that the death toll from rioting in Maputo and the neighboring city of Matola on Wednesday and Thursday has now risen to ten.
The strike that started on September 2 has now been spread to other cities of the country as well. Rioting has now transformed into a general strike in the country. Rapid devaluation of the local currency metical resulted in the skyrocketing of food prices. The price of bread has increased by 30 percent and electricity and water tariffs have also been increased.
The protests turned violent as the police responded by firing on the crowds.
Alberto Nkutumula the government spokesman had told media on Sep 2 that the price hikes were �irreversible.�
