Dow Up, Within 75 Points of Record Close

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 35 points Friday, a 0.25% gain, to close at 14,090. It was the highest close since Oct. 12, 2007, and the third-highest in the Dow’s history. the index is now within 75 points of its record closing level of 14,164.53 — just 0.53% off the nominal high. The Dow gained 0.64% this week, despite suffering a 216-point drop on Monday.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 0.23%, to close at 1,518.20. The index climbed 0.17% this week — up eight of the past nine weeks — and is up 6.45% in 2013. The Russell 2000 index gained 0.4% Friday though still fell 0.16% for the week, its second straight week of declines. The small-cap index is up 7.7% this year, and up 14% in the past 12 months.
