Shopping Not High on the Christmas List

Bloomberg NewsNot fun

Retailers of the world, take note of this piece from Consumerist which caught my eye today — it could be a potential source of holiday anxiety.

The number one item consumers are itching to ditch this season doesnt have anything to do with bad music and crazy aunts in tacky sweaters. No, according to the article, a survey by Consumer Reports found that 20% of us, one in five Americans, would rather do anything but go shopping for gifts right now. The survey allowed voters to check off every annoyance, so pardon the numbers when they climb over 100%.

High on the list of annoyances retailers might want to consider were crowds and long lines with 58% of the vote (Wal-Mart Stores (WMT), Target (TGT) and Costco Wholesale (COST) are you listening?).

Unpleasant experiences in parking lots received 40% of votes and getting into debt came in with 30% of the vote. Also fascinatingly enough, the survey found that 60% of the respondents preferred cash over gift cards.

Good news for all the grandmothers (and electronic retailers) out there.
