Monday’s Apple Rumors — 2 Million iPhones Ready

Here are your Apple rumorsand news items for Monday:

2 Million Verizon Phones Ready: After Verizon (NYSE:VZ) said Friday that it sold out all its preorder allotments of the new iPhone 4 in just two hours, many wondered how many were sold. RBC Capital analyst Mike Abramsky suggested just 100,000 preorders, echoing the December 2009 preorder numbers for the Motorola (NYSE:MMI) Droid phone powered by Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android platform. Concord Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo told website AppleInsider, however, that it’s more likely that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has prepared 2 million phones for the release on iPhone. Component makers have indicated to Kuo that Apple made an ample supply of the new smartphone model throughout December and January.

March Toward iPad 2: Japanese website macotakara.jp said Saturday that Apple will unveil the second-generation iPad in March. Multiple reports also began to fill in more details about just what new features will be introduced. Ming-Chi Kuo of Concord Securities told AppleInsider that 60% of iPad 2 models shipping this spring will be compatible with GSM/UMTS and CDMA 3G networks. These will ship alongside a new model built for 4G LTE networks. Website iLounge said the iPad 2 will likely include near-field communication technology. It has been rumored for more than a year now that Apple would include NFC in its next generation of handheld devices, enabling the iPad 2 and iPhone 5 for uses like quick mobile payments. The NFC chip will also make it easier for Apple handhelds to communicate with one another.

FDA OK: Mim Software’s new app on the Apple platform for medical professionals to share and examine radiological images was approved by the Food and Drug Administration on Friday. Mobile Mim lets doctors examine x-rays and other images on their iPhones or iPads to make diagnoses “based on computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and nuclear medicine technology, such as positron emission tomography.” For patients, the new app means they can hassle their physician for test results any time and anywhere. Apple awarded Mim the Apple Design Award for “Best iPhone Healthcare & Fitness Application” in 2008.
