Even the 99% Get to Enjoy Art Basel Miami

If you think the Occupy Wall Street movement or European debt woe is quelling interest in Art Basel Miami Beach, think again. Despite its sold-out hotels and VIP parties that increasingly separate the mere millionaire from billionaire, Art Basel Miami Beach is proving hotter than ever. There are more than 260 leading galleries from North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa taking part in the four-day event, which begins Thursday.

As it celebrates its 10th anniversary, Art Basel Miami is also proving more inclusive than ever for the 99% not always privy to the posh parties and private invites of art's elite.

Expanding from its base at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Art Basel Miami Beach is collaborating this year with the Bass Museum of Art to transform the thoroughfare of Collins Avenue into a working public gallery space known as Art Public that will include installations and performances by established and emerging artists such as L.A.'s Glenn Kaino. Farther away, at the New World Center designed by star architect Frank Gehry, Art Video will include a series of open-to-the-public viewings of large-scale video installations by rotating artists in SoundScape Park.Miami will host a total of 17 art fairs throughout the city, ranging from Art Miami in the city's ever-hot Wynwood Arts District to Design Miami, which focuses on design culture and commerce. The opening of Miami's art week with public events and civic installations transform the city into America's ultimate art party. In terms of hotels, Soho Beach House has joined the ranks of the W South Beach, the Delano and the Raleigh for top hotel billing among VIP guests during Art Basel Miami. Those without reservations can still try its Cecconi's eatery, which many insist is even tastier than the membership-only dining room a few floors above. And those not invited to the famous Jeffrey Deitch dinner at the Raleigh can book into The Royal a few nights later and still partake in the arty action.

The Shelbourne was to reopen Sunday fresh off a two-year refurbishment led by hotelier Keith Menin of Menin Hotels, which owns Miami's Bentley Hotel and Sanctuary South Beach, as well as Chicago's Raffaello. Its iconic beachfront location in South Beach bucks the trend of luxury and boutique hotels opening on the northern edges of Miami Beach. This 1940s deco landmark relaunches with a glossy pool deck and concert by alternative-rock band Young the Giant. In addition to private parties at new Vesper American Brasserie and a basement-level cabaret lounge, Microsoft's Bing will host Art of Night -- nightly art events and performances.

Other hotels getting in on the Art Basel action include The Standard Spa, which will offer a first-time showing of Andy Warhol's San Diego Surf. Hosted by Interview magazine and The Andy Warhol Museum, the showing of the 1968 Warhol film is limited to select hotel guests and invitees. Nearby at the Mondrian Miami, artist Marco Brambilla will debut a 3-D video art installation titled RPM for Miami's art week that's co-sponsored by Ferrari and viewable by the general public. And those who would like a glimpse of the high-paced art auction world can attend a public preview of Christie's Post-War and Contemporary Auction at JW Marriott Marquis Miami.

Several of Miami's leading fashion brands will offer special events also open to the public through the week. Maison Martin Margiela will debut an exhibition near its boutique in the Miami Design District titled Love, etc. Italian design house Fendi Casa will showcase artist Nick Cave and his Soundsuits -- a mix of futuristic monster and lovable sculptural works with a performance art undertone. A more private event, open by invitation only, will collaborate with Beats by Dr. Dre headphones that will allow the suits to come to life. Nightclubs also cash in on the Art Basel action with special events often booked as a mix of private and limited engagements but thoroughly open to those who know how to handle a velvet rope. At LIV inside the Fontainebleau, David Guetta will host an Art Basel edition of his Ibiza-based nightclub on Friday while electronic artist Moby will headline Mansion Nightclub's Art Basel lineup a night later. Those looking to be closer to the action in Wynwood Art District should try the new Wood Tavern or nearby Bardot, which will host the indie group Hot Chip in a special engagement that's one of the hottest nightlife tickets of the Art Basel week.RELATED STORIES: >>Art Basel Festival Colors Miami Weekend>>Art Crowd Leaves, Buenos Aires Deals Stay>>Target Not Alone in Designer CollaborationsFollow TheStreet on Twitter and become a fan on Facebook.
