As expected, Microsoft (MSFT) today launched Office 2010, the newest version of its flagship productivity suite. The company also unveiled SharePoint 2010, Visio 2010 and Project 2010.
With the new versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, the company is putting a new focus on connectivity and collaboration, offering “online companions” to the new Office applications via Microsoft Office Web Apps.
As Reuters notes, the company unveiled some new features today, like editing photos in Word and using video in PowerPoint. But the more significant move is the adoption of the cloud: the company said buyers of Office will get immediate access to the new Office Web Apps online offering via both PCs and smart phones. That’s a clear response to the dent Google (GOOG) is making with its free Web-based Google Docs suite.
Office 2010 is available today in 14 languages, and over the next few months will be sold in 94 languages.
The Street has been eagerly anticipating the launch, which analysts thing will provide a revenue boost in the second half of calendar 2010 and beyond.
MSFT today is up 46 cents, or 1.6%, to $29.34.
