Google (GOOG) is currently in negotiation with the Federal Trade Commission over a potentially multimillion dollar fine it may face for its breach of Apple‘s (AAPL) Safari Internet browser, Bloomberg is reporting.
The FTC is arguing that Google deceived consumers as well as violated the terms of a consent it signed with the commission in 2011 when it planted cookies on Safari, bypassing Apple’s own privacy settings. The fine could be tens of millions of dollars, according to sources close to the confidential talks.
If Google pays a fine, it would be the first leveled by the FTC for a violation of Internet privacy safeguards.
Both Google and Apple were recently off more than 2%.
