Top 10 Cheap Companies To Own For 2015

Friday's trading session saw a halt in trading of two major precious-metals companies on news that the Chilean government was shutting down operations at the Pascua Lama mine. Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) , which operates the mine, was halted first, with joint-venture partner Silver Wheaton (NYSE: SLW  ) halted a few minutes later. The mine, which Barrick has already spent more than $5 billion developing, represents one of the largest resources for gold and silver in the world.

The bigger question that Friday's events raise is whether precious-metals companies are becoming cheap or dangerous at current levels. Barrick is down about 40% this year, and while others such as Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) and Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM  ) are down less, they have still slid by roughly 20% each. Gold as a commodity is down more than 17% this year, as represented by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) . In addition, global macroeconomic events are aligning to make the future direction of precious metals very uncertain, at the very least increasing the volatility and risk associated with these types of investments.

There aren't many people who will suggest that Kohl's Department Stores (NYSE: KSS  ) is a subversive threat to our existence as we know it. Lucky for you, dear reader, I am one of them. For years International Business Machines Corp.(NYSE: IBM) has remained a technology bellwether, as well as a top stock to own in most portfolios. The brilliant move that took it out of the personal computer business and focused on the core services business pushed the stock higher and higher. Unfortunately, business has stalled for Big Blue, and back-to-back quarters of dismal performance are starting to make even the most stalwart investors impatient.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Compass Minerals (CMP) is a producer of minerals, including salt, sulfate of potash specialty fertilizer and magnesium chloride. This stock closed up 3.4% at $75.60 in Wednesday's trading session.

    Wednesday's Volume: 913,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 212,481

    Volume % Change: 315%

From a technical perspective, CMP gapped higher here off its recent low of $64.24 with heavy upside volume. This stock recently gapped down sharply from around $90 to $64.24 with heavy downside volume. That move pushed shares of CMP into extremely oversold territory, since the stock's current relative strength index reading is 25.78. Oversold can always get more oversold, but it's also an area where a stock can experience a powerful bounce higher from. Shares of CMP are now starting to move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if CMP manages to take out its gap down day high of $78.20 and then once it clears its 200-day moving average at $79.14 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CMP as long as it's trending above Wednesday's low of $73.07 or $72.50 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 212,481 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then CMP will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone that started near $90.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Michael Lewis]

Industry juggernaut Liberty Media (NASDAQ: LMCA  ) is a busy, busy organization -- acquiring and spinning off companies at an impressive clip. While it has recently taken the reins over satellite-radio company Sirius XM (NASDAQ: SIRI  ) , it has also spun out the largest premium cable company available, Starz (NASDAQ: STRZA  ) . Liberty gives investors plenty of options (no pun intended) to evaluate with its myriad of subsidiaries, not to mention the parent company itself. And still, the company has a sizable cash hoard and the ability to tap capital markets for another substantial acquisition. Though at this point it is mere speculation, where could Liberty be heading next?
