Apache Corporation (APA) is one of the world's largest mid-major oil and gas exploration and production companies. They have a diversified portfolio of energy assets including on-shore, offshore, international, and domestic exposure. Diverse revenue streams protect Apache against volatility in any particular operating segment or region.
Apache operates an "acquire and exploit" strategy, acquiring land previously explored by major oil companies and either boosting production or further exploring the land. This strategy is entirely dependent on management's ability to identify underutilized assets and pay reasonable prices. Apache's management has come under criticism lately for mis-execution and an apparent reversal of strategy announced on their February, 2013 conference call in the form of a potential $2 billion asset sale. Shares are down 28% over the last twelve months and presently trade below their book value of $76.84. The market is mistaken, and this note will explain the rationale behind management's recent announcements and the path Apache can take to reclaim significant value for investors.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By McWillams]
Oklahoma-based Devon Energy(DVN) is an analyst favorite, receiving 21 "buy" ratings and nine "hold" calls, but no "sell" rankings.
Devon explores for and produces natural gas and oil. Its stock has run up 33% in the past three months, fulfilling Jefferies' thesis. Now, it has just 3% of upside before passing the bank's price target. It might be best to wait for a pullback before buying Devon. But, most-bullish Macquarie, an Australian investment bank with a focus on energy companies, expects Devon's stock to advance another 14% to $98 in 12 months.
Devon's business is largely focused on natural gas, with two-thirds of sales from that commodity and the other third coming from oil and natural gas liquids. It also owns gas pipelines and treatment facilities.
Natural gas is domestically abundant. In fact, some geologists estimate that North America houses the richest natural gas deposits. For this reason, businessmen, such as T. Boone Pickens, think using this resource is critical to energy independence.
The downside is that recent shale discoveries have expanded supply and dampened the commodity's pricing. Devon has been repositioning itself as an onshore North America gas company. Consequently, it has been divesting international assets and using the proceeds to lessen its float. In the third quarter, shares outstanding dropped 3% to 432 million.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Hawkinvest]
Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL) is one of Carnival's competitors in the cruise industry. Royal does not have the same issues as Carnival in terms of the Costa Concordia incident, but it could be impacted by discounting in cruise fares, as well as higher fuel costs. Royal Caribbean shares were recently downgraded to a strong sell by Zacks Investment Research, and a recent analyst report states:
We are a bit doubtful about the cruising sector in the near term after Carnival's ship Costa Concordia ran aground in mid-January on Italy's west coast. The disaster hit the industry in the wake of the wave season between January and March. The recent tragedy resulted in subdued bookings. Royal Caribbean's overall booking volumes in North America came down. In Europe, where the incident took place, the cut in bookings has been steeper. Business in APMEA was also down slightly. The company expects a 20% decline in new bookings during the peak of wave season.
This stock was trading below $26 in early January, but it has rallied with the markets. With oil prices trending higher, and the stock at the high end of the recent trading range, the shares look vulnerable to a pullback.
Here are some key points for RCL:
Current share price: $29.89
The 52 week range is $18.70 to $45.45
Earnings estimates for 2011: $2.32 per share
Earnings estimates for 2012: $2.94 per share
Annual dividend: 40 cents per share which yields about 1.3%

Gastar Exploration (GST) is an independent energy company, engaged in the exploration, development and production of natural gas and oil in the U.S. This stock is trading up 2.8% to $1.26 in recent trading.
Today’s Range: $1.24-$1.30
52-Week Range: $0.70-$3.36
Volume: 186,000
Three-Month Average Volume: 516,159
From a technical perspective, GST is bouncing modestly higher here right above some near-term support $1.15 with light volume. This stock has been uptrending strongly for the last month and change, with shares soaring from a low of 70 cents to its recent high of $1.38. During that move, shares of GST have been mostly making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed GST within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if GST clears some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.38 to $1.39 with high volume.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GST as long as it’s trending above $1.15, and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 516,159 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then GST will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance level at its 200-day moving average of $1.77 or possible even $1.89 to $1.96.
