Tuesday Apple Rumors: Is the iPhone Still on Top at Verizon?

Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:

What’s Verizon’s Top-Selling Smartphone: An analyst at William Blair & Co. says sales of Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone have been eclipsed by Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Motorola RAZR MAXX at wireless carrier Verizon (NYSE:VZ), Fortune reports. The analyst says iPhone sales are slowing as consumers await the debut of the next-generation iPhone, which isexpected to be unveiled in October. The iPhone has been Verizon’s top-selling smartphone since it came to the carrier last year. However, an analystatCanaccord Genuity argues that while the Motorola phone is “gaining ground” against the iPhone, it hasn’t overtaken it yet, and the iPhone 4S remains the leading smartphone at Verizon, as well as AT&T (NYSE:T) and Sprint (NYSE:S), so far this year, Apple Insider says.

Apple Stores Not the Best Sales Channel for Sprint: Big-box retailers like Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) andWal-Mart (NYSE:WMT)sell more iPhones for Sprint than do Apple Stores, according to AllThingsD. A study from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) finds that Apple store sales accounted for just 9% of Sprint iPhones, while Best Buy sales accounted for 19%, In fact, Sprint sells twice the number of iPhones through other retailers than it sells through Apple Stores.

San Diego Public School Students to Get iPads: The San Diego Unified School District has purchased 26,000 iPads that will be distributed to grades K-12 classrooms in the fall, 10News.com reports. The iPads will carry iBooks versions of the students’ textbooks. The purchase reportedly cost the district $15 million.
