10 Best Medical Stocks For 2014

AstraZeneca's (NYSE: AZN  ) phase 3 study of the effectiveness and safety of developmental rheumatoid arthritis drug fostamatinib succeeded in meeting two primary endpoints. The OSKIRA-1 trial showed that fostamatinib increased ACR20 response rates in two different patient groups, according to a statement on the matter from the company. (ACR scores are used in measuring changes in rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.)

The drug also proved safe in the study, with patients tolerating fostamatinib about as well as they had in an earlier phase 2 study. Reported side effects were mild, including diarrhea, nausea, and hypertension.

Dr. Briggs W. Morrison, AstraZeneca's chief medical officer and executive vice president of global medicine development, spoke about fostamatinib's success in the statement, saying, "These top-line results provide important information on the efficacy and safety of fostamatinib and demonstrate that the compound has an effect on the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis."

10 Best Medical Stocks For 2014: Curis Inc.(CRIS)

Curis, Inc., a drug discovery and development company, focuses on the research and development of cancer therapeutics. The company, under collaboration with Genentech, Inc., is conducting a pivotal Phase II clinical trial on its lead molecule, GDC-0449 in advanced basal cell carcinoma patients, as well as various Phase II clinical trials in first-line metastatic colorectal cancer and advanced ovarian cancer patients. It is also evaluating CUDC-101, a small molecule that is in a Phase I clinical testing and is designed to target histone deacetylase, epidermal growth factor receptor, and epidermal growth factor receptor 2. In addition, Curis has a development candidate, Debio 0932, which is a Heat Shock Protein 90 or Hsp90 inhibitor. The company holds a license agreement with Debiopharm related to its Hsp90 technologies. Further, it involves in preclinical testing for the development of candidates from its targeted cancer programs. The company was founded in 2000 and is base d in Lexington, Massachusetts.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Michael Shulman]

Curis (NASDAQ: CRIS) has developed a series of cancer treatments based on a technology that disrupts intercellular signaling in the Hedgehog pathway. Disrupting communication disrupts cell duplication, the foundation of tumor growth.

Curis has more than 20 trials under way with Genentech/Roche and the National Cancer Institute. This year, Genentech will likely report results of a basal cell carcinoma trial for skin cancer, and it has said it will go from this mid-phase trial directly to an application for approval if the results are strong enough.

One success means a volcanic eruption in the stock, as it will prove the core technology is a viable platform for cancer treatments. A failure could put the entire program — and the company — in jeopardy. I believe the technology will be a success, which means this $2 stock could be worth $40-plus. If I’m wrong, you will probably be looking at a 50-cent stock. I’d say it’s worth the risk.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Michael Shulman]

Cerus (NASDAQ: CERS) developed and markets the INTERCEPT Blood System, which is designed to inactivate blood-borne pathogens in blood components so the blood can be used in transfusions. In other words, it “cleans” donated blood of viruses, bacteria and parasites.

Cerus is pretty much the only game in town with this remarkable technology, and it has gained approval in most large European countries. Why not the United States? Well, management has not stood up to the FDA. The approval has been held up by one member of the FDA even though Cerus hit the primary endpoints in its pivotal Phase III trial and is receiving grants from the Department of Defense.

The FDA should quit dragging its feet eventually. There is no scientific or product risk in this stock. Their system works. My target price is $14 in one to three years.

  • [By Geoff Gannon] 路 DreamWorks (DWA)

Read these reports. Look for something that might have interested me. Why would Geoff look at DNB, Chuck E. Cheese, etc.? What got him interested in the stock? Do I see the same thing?

Whenever possible, also read the quarterly earnings call transcripts. You can listen to them too. But it easier if you read them and listen to them.

Just listening is a bad idea.

Whenever I can get a transcript of anything even Warren Buffett appearance on CNBC Il keep a copy of the transcript even when I have a copy of the video (or audio). You can refer back to a transcript easily. You can highlight. You can take notes.

    Taking Notes

Now, you are doing those things when reading an annual report, right?

You never just sit down and read an annual report. You always sit down with a pen, a highlighter, a pad of paper, and a calculator. Use the margins of a 10-K or your pad of paper to jot down notes. Ask questions. Do calculations.

If you ever see a 10-K after Ie read it it not very white anymore. There lots of stuff written in the margins. Mostly it questions I was asking myself. But it also calculations of numbers the company does not provide.

    Numbers to Know

So, for example, in a bank 10-K I always write down:

    路 Deposits per share

    路 Deposits per branch

    路 Cost of deposits

    路 Texas Ratio

You can actually look up the Texas Ratio of any bank here. And some banks calculate and report cost of deposits the way I like to think about it. But, it not common for banks to report deposits per branch although small banks will sometimes mention (perhaps in the shareholder letter) what their biggest branch has in deposits. Others may mention how quickly new branches achieved a deposit milestone.

Those are the kinds of numbers I write in the margins of a bank 10-K. There will be questions like: hy is efficiency ratio so low? , hy aren they reserving more? etc. Sometimes, you will get an answer to these questions in the shareholder letter or management discussion in the 10-K. Often, you won.

But when companies follow unusual practices holding lots of inventory, keeping expenses very low, focusing on specific kinds of clients, operating stores of unusual size, etc. they will tend to explain and defend their strategic choice somewhere in the 10-K. This is especially true if there might be criticism of the approach.

    Hudson City

For example, a bank might explain why they choose to focus on a certain area as Hudson City (HCBK) does here:

hrough our branch offices, we have operations in 10 of the top 50 counties in the United States ranked by median household income. Operating in high median household income counties fits well with our jumbo mortgage loan and consumer deposit business modelhe northern New Jersey market represents the greatest concentration of population, deposits and income in New Jersey. The combination of these counties represents more than half of the entire New Jersey population and more than half of New Jersey households.
